August 9th Program of Studio Fine 55 Arts Guild
Featuring Artist Carolyn Owen
"Gourds from Garden to Gallery"

The program will start at 1:00pm on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at the National Avenue Christian Church, 1515 S. National Avenue, Springfield, Following the presentation, Studio 55 Fine Arts Guild members and visitors are invited to participate in an artist “show and share"
Mrs. Owen’s presentation will include a display of her art, discussion about growing gourds as well as harvesting, drying and cleaning them. Also the tools used for cleaning, carving, and burning designs into the gourds will be shown as well as various methods of adding color and other embellishments.
Master Gourd Artist Carolyn Owen enjoys every aspect of the gourd from growing to transforming them into art pieces. The discovery of gourds as a creative media was the result of a life quest through numerous crafts and artistic endeavors.
She has been creating gourd art for about 13 years. Named gourd “Artist of the Year” for Missouri in 2012 and has won the “People’s Choice award” two times at the Missouri State Gourd Art Festival and the “Best of Master’s Award”.
“I love to incorporate carving, wood burning and various ink dyes and techniques to enhance the natural beauty of the gourd. The possibilities are endless and the unique shapes and surfaces can be very challenging. No other form of art has held my fascination the way working with gourds has.”

September 1st: Is the Studio 55 Annual Fall Exhibit and Silent Auction at National Ave Christian Church Gallery
- Silent auction items are due August 25th, at the time of set up. You can also turn them in at the August 9th meeting. We hope each member will donate or solicit at least 2 silent auction items. Check your instruction packet for details. Please have the correct mailing address of the business or individual contributing neatly written on the postcard thank you notes in your packet. Studio 55 will take care of postage and mailing thank you cards.

- Member’s Art is to be delivered for the exhibit on August 25th (limit 2). Registration is required to exhibit and there will be a sign up sheet at the meeting. You must register no later than August 20th to be including in the exhibit. For complete art exhibit information click here

From 4:00 pm until closing, the Faucett family (owners of Bambinos) will dedicate 20% of sales at their restaurant to Sammy’s Window. Last year they raised $635! Please come enjoy their great food, knowing you will be helping Sammy’s Window give supplies and support to foster kids in Springfield and the surrounding area.
- Raffle tickets: Early sale of Raffle tickets for a 2 night stay at the Dickey House Bed and Breakfast ($350 value) will be available to Studio 55 members at the August 9th meeting. On September 1st the tickets will be open to the public.
- Food donations: Please sign up with Rick Atwell (917-575-3658) or rickatwell@icloud.com We had over 300 visitors last year and they were hungry!!!

- Board Member Kathy Luna is having surgery at Cox Medical Center. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers
- One of our members, Judith McClung fell last month and is recovering at Manor Care Rehabilitation, 2915 S. Fremont Ave. Her phone number is 417-882-1709. She would appreciate cards and phone calls.

Maschinos Home Store "Outside Art: Springfield’s Sculptures"
Maschino's hosts a two month exhibit of the work of regional artists from August 29 through October 30, 2017. The theme of the juried show is “Outside Art: Springfield’s Sculptures”. Spingfield has a rich amount of public sculpture. The theme is this show was chosen to see how 2D artists interpret 3D art works.In addition to the Public Sculpture noted at www.SculptureWalkSpringfield, there is public sculpture in the Botanical Garden, the campus of Missouri State, the Sports Hall of Fame and Commercial Street. There are many other spots exhibiting public art, too.
