Carol Roberts (New Member)

My husband and I moved here recently from Northwest Arkansas to be closer to our son and grandchildren.  I have been painting for approximately 40 years, mostly in oils and watercolor.  I like to paint pretty much everything but most of my work is either floral, still lifes, and people.  I am a signature member of the American Impressionist Society, Southwestern Watercolor Society, Mid-Southern Watercolor Society, Texas and Neighbors, and the Artists of Northwest Arkansas.

I am looking forward to being able to participate in the many art opportunities available in the Springfield area.

“You Might Want To Gogh”

Are you interested in a different kind of sensory art exhibit? The Immersive van Gogh exhibit  could be that opportunity. My wife and I attended this unusual display May 3rd in an exhibit venue, the Lighthouse ArtSpace, in the Zona Rosa area north of Kansas City.

This continually running presentation lasts about 35 minutes and is a very creative audiovisual choreography of Van Gogh’s art projected 360 degrees in a large room including the floor. We watched it about two and a half times to get a reinforced perspective. There are a few benches available, or you can rent a seat cushion, stand or sit on the floor. It was a bit cool, so wearing a jacket is advised.

The exhibit continues through September 5 and there are plenty of available times to attend. For specific information about Immersive Van Gogh and to purchase tickets search KansasCityVanGogh.com

I am a graduate from SMSU with a BFA degree in Graphic Design. I worked 10 years in Nashville Tennessee in a Christian publishing company, Randall House, developing their art department doing illustration and layout design.

I moved back to Missouri working in other publishing companies including MWM Dexter, Bass Pro Shop, and McCann printing. I spent another 10 years working in Christian publishing in Springfield at Gospel Publishing House.

After retirement I started pursuing classes in Acrylic painting and taking classes. I enjoy painting animals and landscapes. Other hobbies include horseback riding, trout fishing and sewing.

Gift cards and checks can be great surprises for any occasion and presenting them in unique handmade envelopes can make them extra special. With the closeness of events such as graduation, Mother’s Day etc… I began making these small decorative envelopes to insert gift cards, checks or handmade trinkets for my friends and loved ones.

I made patterns for two sizes and used my colorful mop-up papers on which I outlined each envelope. After cutting out the envelope, I carefully folded the edges and top and secured the sides using a glue stick. I often used my scalloped craft scissors to round the closure flap. Next, I finished with some doodling or attached a handmade flower embellishment adding to the whimsical beauty of each unique envelope. Get creative by adding a personal handmade touch for a gift card or check for your loved ones!

Judy Spahn Bio:

"Quilting became an integral part of my life back in the early '70's, while living in the VA suburbs of Washington DC.  "Quilters Unlimited," the local group that formed, grew from one small chapter to multiple chapters all around the beltway.  Here I met and was inspired by Jinny Beyer, now a world renowned teacher, and was on staff for eight years at the Hilton Head Quilt Seminar that she created. I have done commissioned work, belonged to an art group, "New Image," and shown in various galleries.  I also learned valuable lessons in basic design from a dear friend and neighbor, Lesly-Claire Greenburg, trained at Pratt Institute, in NYC. My work is original, drawing on my math background. It is hand sewn and hand quilted.  I moved to the backwoods of Marion, Co, AR, in 1998, and have continued to make quilts, an endeavor that is still dear to me."

Editors Note: Judy now lives in Springfield, Missouri.

“I retired four years ago after 45 years as an insurance agent. I always liked the look of watercolor work so I decided to give it a try, but I had no experience or training.

I took a few classes from one of your own members, Paula Moore, to learn basics of paints, brushes, paper, etc. and then ventured out.

I seem to have better results with wildlife and landscapes.  We spend time in Florida in the winter, so end up doing a lot of beach themed paintings.
