Susie Sharpe:

Dear Friends,

I hope you are staying well.  2020 was a tough year but I think we are seeing some hopeful signs everywhere.

As you might have heard, my art got accepted to 3 International Art Fairs this year including the one in Paris.  I strive to share positive, optimistic messages through my artwork so,  at this time, I am offering the biggest discounts ever to make them available to all those who love my art.

With Warm regards,

Susie

Carol Chappell:

Hello, Studio 55 members. This is Carol Chappell. Like many of us, I am mostly staying home, going to the grocery store and trying to keep myself and others safe.
My latest collage is “Red State”. It started because I got several Christmas cards with red birds on them. Then I kept finding images with red as a dominant color. This collage grew from a few birds.
I have cleaned bookshelves and donated some to the library. My February projects are to sort family photos and catalog items to be given to family members when I am gone. Walking is helping my physical and mental states. So keep moving, have projects, do art!

Please keep Georgene Verlin in your prayers and thoughts. She is one of our past presidents, a long time member and regularly seen on the first row at our monthly programs. Her husband  Raymond (Harlan) Verlin died Jan 2, 2021 due to the Covid virus in Mercy hospital, Lebanon, Missouri. Harlan and Georgene were married 57 years. Many of you know Harlan since he brought Georgene to meetings and he and Georgene were at the first Friday Art Walks in down town Springfield.

Congratulations to Audrey Bottrell-Parks who received 2nd place in the Spring Competition of the Portrait Society of America (Missouri-Kansas Group)

"Shirley" 18 x 22 pastel painting on Uart sanded paper by Audrey Bottrell Parks! Audrey says about this painting, "I was a delight to paint! Her expression is warm with a hint of mischief, while her scarf beautifully wraps her in dignity and grace."

Juror's comment: Audrey captured the warmth in the eyes with mischief in the mouth as it is almost a smirk. Its simplicity with the added element of pattern compliments her skin tone and adds interest to the solid background and silhouette.

PSoA New Jersey State Ambassador Nanci France-Vaz  was the juror for the competition!

As you may have surmised from the name of my blog, I am a huge fan of using stones in my creations. The uses for these painted rocks are endless. Besides being pretty they can also be functional as signage, paper weights, plant stakes, holiday decor (think snowflakes, eye balls, hearts, Easter eggs, patriotic symbols etc...) and more. Here are some variations of uses I have found for stones that I have painted.

I find most of my stones on river or creek beds and scrub them thoroughly. If needed, I apply a neutral color wash of diluted acrylic paint. Once dry, I sketch my design on the stone in pencil. I use a fine tip, permanent, black sharpie marker to outline my design and markers to add color. I have a set of metallic markers that work well too. For dots and accents I often use acrylic paint applied with the flat end of a straight pin attached to a pencil eraser. Also, I like Sakura gel pens for this. There is a bit of waiting for the markers and/or paint to dry and I have ruined a few pieces because I am impatient. For the final step, I spray the stones with a clear varnish. Rock on with your own painted stones!
