November 10th Program

1:00 p.m.

Featured Speaker: Professional Glass Artist Cheryl Vowels

Topic: “My Glass Adventures”

The Gallery at National Avenue Christian Church
1515 South National Ave. Springfield Missouri

(entrance to The Gallery is off the parking behind the church)

Studio 55 Arts Guild members, art lovers and potential members are invited to meet in-person in our regular meeting place: The Gallery at National Avenue Christian Church.  A big shout out to Tracy Bruton for arranging our speaker and program!

If you have never attended meetings, the space is very large and also handicapped accessible. Masks are required, and social distancing will also be practiced for the welfare of everyone attending.

Our Featured Speaker will be none other than Studio 55 Arts Guild member and professional glass artist Cheryl Vowels! The topic of her presentation will be “My Glass Adventures.” She will be sharing with us her journey in and out of glass over the last four decades - from stained glass to Tiffany glass, to blowing glass and finally to kiln formed glass. It will be, without doubt, a very interesting and colorful presentation. You can see some of Cheryl’s beautiful work below.

“Cheryl started working in glass about 40 years ago. It was her love for the medium and the way the light danced through it on which her passion was built. Her technical skills were developed using historical methods, but her more recent works utilize methods developed by Tiffany. Cheryl's love for the natural world can be seen and felt through her pieces. She utilizes not only glass but agates, stones, shells, and numerous other articles that can be wrapped in the Tiffany method. Her process has evolved from the traditional to the modern. She loves how the interaction between glass and light explode when the right pieces come together. She doesn't try to make the glass work for her, instead she lets it dictate the piece and design.  Her designs are featured in the September 2021 issue of the international magazine, Stained Glass News.” Source

According to Cheryl, "I rely on my almost 40 years in glass construction for the mechanics in the pieces, but it is my background in biology  and passion for the natural world that evoke the feelings I translate into my work. I LOVE glass!!!! Everything about it..how the light dances and how your mind tries to interpret

that message. Whether it is soldered, fused, or blown....I LOVE the result. I compose predominantly abstract pieces that are purely intuitive in nature, and "out of the box" by design. Source

Submission Deadline: Friday, November 19, 2021

Date you will be notified of acceptance or not acceptance: Tuesday, November 30, 2021

Drop-off date at the airport for  entries: 9 a.m. to noon, Friday, December 10, 2021.

Pick-up date at the airport: 9 a.m. to noon, Friday, February 25, 2022.

1. Artwork (paintings and photographs) is recommended to be at least 36 inches on one side including the dimension of the frame.  Some smaller size work may be accepted.

2. Hanging the art requires that the piece be wired with D-rings, 1/3 of the way down the back of the work. Do NOT pull the wire tight. For appropriate wire length go to the center of the length dimension and measure down from the top 1/6 of the total height (for example, if 36 inches in total height then mark a spot 6 inches below the top of the midpoint of the length). Pull the wire to that spot and then tighten the wire at the D-rings.

3. Works must be two dimension (sorry, no three dimensional work for this exhibit). Weight of the artwork cannot exceed 15 pounds.

4. Work that is not framed must be gallery wrapped (staples on the back, not on the sides) and with all edges and sides finished (not blank).  There are approximately 40 spaces available for art depending on the size of the artwork selected.

5. You may submit up to five (5) entries in a digital format (JPEG) of your art. Please submit art for the show that has not been previously featured at the Sky Gallery in the last three years.

6. Name each JPG with your first initial, last name and title of the work (example: BSmithTitle, jpg)

7. Attach to the back of your artwork : Your name, title, price, medium, dimensions (width x height in inches) and contact information. Also send this information to the three parties mentioned below. All artwork must be for sale. Twenty-five percent (25%) commission will be charged for all sold art.

8.The Springfield Regional Arts Council will handle the sale and send you a check.

Claire Barber:

Each Christmas for all the special little boys in my life I design and make a reindeer ornament. It is my hope that when they are grown and leave home they will have a treasured handmade reindeer collection to decorate their own Christmas trees. This year I am making plaid cloth ornaments.

Using a discarded old shirt I doubled the fabric cutting a front and back reindeer. Then, using a blanket stick I began sewing the edges together beginning at the top around the antlers. I stopped and stuffed the antlers and resumed sewing toward the bottom and around one leg. I added additional batting and continued sewing leaving a hole in the butt area to finish stuffing. Once the entire reindeer was adequately filled I finished the final stitching. I made the embellishments cutting small circles about the size of a penny in contrasting fabric scraps. For the eyes I topped the embellishment with a black bead. I attached the circular decorations on both sides of the deer with a needle and thread. For the neck adornment I braided twine and attached a bell. I secured this with some stitching on the neck area and added a string for the hanger. On Dasher, Dancer, Donner and Blitzen!
