Zebra, Pen and Ink Drawing by Eric Ray

September 19, 2017, Studio 55 Pen and Ink Drawing Class:

Studio 55 will be hosting a pen and ink drawing class with Eric Ray, artist, illustrator and designer on September 19th, 9:30-3:30 at the National Avenue Christian Church Gallery, To register call Steve McGuire, 882-8673 or sign up at the meeting on September 13th. Cost for the class for guild members is $35 and non-members $45. http://ericraycreative.wixsite.com/artwork/color-illustration

You may remember Eric Ray gave the program at a recent meeting.Class description: “From the old masters to modern illustrators, pen and ink is a bold and versatile medium. We will touch on the traditional ink drawing tools, but most of the class will cover the use of the disposable technical pens now available. We will check out the basic line drawing techniques. We will also explore the ‘why and when’ of mixing pen drawing styles to achieve the creative results you desire. Students are encouraged to bring a subject/photo that they would like to draw during the workshop.”

Mr. Ray started doing pen and ink artwork decades ago as a freelance Illustrator in Southern California. He has a great passion for creating art. "I choose to work in Pen and Ink because it is not a simple media to master and is also relatively uncommon. I strive to develop art with a feel for the subject matter and the story I wish to tell. The search for the beauty in the complexity of form, pattern and texture is important. I enjoy creating visual shortcuts, innuendo and suggestion balanced against insanely detailed rendering in my pen work."

Number of Participants: Minimum 5, Maximum 25.

For best results, a materials list has been attached, but students could complete the majority of the workshop with a basic drawing pen and any plain paper pad.
Materials List:
Paper: One pad of drawing paper (Bristol, plate vellum or smooth) 9” x 12” or 11” x 14”.
Hot press or smooth watercolor paper can also be used.
Pencil: HB or 2H, or mechanical pencil and appropriate eraser.
Eraser: White Mars Plastic eraser.
Disposable archival pens:
Disposable pens in black waterproof ink. They come in various sizes and in sets. Suggested sizes, .01, .03 and .05. Some brand names are as follows: Micron Pigma, Nexus, Prismacolor fine line markers, Alvin Penstik India Ink drawing pen, Faber Castell Pitt Artist Drawing Pen sets.
