This series of4 classes is designed for individuals with little to no drawing experience. You will learn form, perspective, composition, light and shadow, and techniques to improve hand/eye coordination that will assist you in achieving realistic renderings.

John taught art for thirty years from the elementary to the college level.  He loves teaching because he enjoys sharing what he has learned over the years.  John works in oils , acrylics and watercolors.  However watercolors are his favorite medium.  According to John, “they have a spontaneous quality that is very hard to achieve in other mediums."  John has been accepted into Watercolor USA twice. First in 1999 for his painting entitled, “CHEERS’ (Judges Award) and next in 2018 for his painting entitled “SISTERS”. See other paintings here
He maintains his studio in Springfield and stays very busy with commissions as well as teaching workshops.  He has taught watercolor workshops both here and abroad.  From this point on John plans to concentrate mainly on watercolors.  According to John,” They are just so fun to paint, I can’t seem to get enough of them”.  If you are interested in registering for the workshop or have questions, please contact  studio55guild@gmail.com Suggested Supply list here

Description:​ A group of artists that meet and work on their own individual projects who offering support in watercolor, acrylic, oil, pencil, pen and ink, pastel and design. (FREE) for 55 and older, others welcome for a small fee. 

Do you ever wish there was a place you could:  

  • paint/draw with others
  • get feedback from other artists
  • have art guidance when you get “stuck”
  • drop in to paint without commitment of the rest of your life​

You are invited to join us every Monday, from 1-3:30 North View Senior Center, 301 E. Talmage. (Next to Doling Fitness Center) Just bring your current work and art supplies and create in this beautiful facility. North view Art Group began around 10 years ago and is a great support group for artist in our community. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to paint with others at this beautiful facility.

Applied Chinese Brush Strokes: Springfield Art Museum: May 31, 2018 at 6 PM, Friends of the Springfield Art Museum (FOSAM) and Studio 55 Fine Arts Guild are partnering to host another ArtTalk featuring Hing Wah Hatch. Classes were attended by over 100 participants from Springfield and the surrounding area.


  • Springfield Art Museum: June 7, 2018: Those who enjoyed Hing Wah Hatch's Applied Chinese Brush Strokes ArtTalk on May 31, will have three extended learning workshops with Hatch. She will demonstrate additional techniques, as you practice your skills with plenty of one-on-one time with the artist. Southwest Missouri Woman's Artist Retreat May 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 2019


This Spring Women's Artist Retreat is a four-day retreat workshop to be held in May at Rockbridge, MO. at the Rockbridge Trout Ranch, 4297 County Road 142, Rockbridge, MO 65741-7801. The Women Artist Retreat offers Plein Air and/or in-studio instruction in the painting mediums by our guest artist/ instructors. The guest artist/instructors for the Women Artist Retreat 2019 are Shirley Nachtrieb, a St. Louis watercolor artist and Audrey Bottrell-Parks, a pastel artist and drawing instructor. During the retreat you will have the opportunity to work with both artists. The Cost of the Woman Artist Retreat (includes workshops, accommodations, facilities and 2 meals) is $375. After March 15 the cost will be $400. There is a limit of 20 participants for this retreat. Cash, Check or Credit Card are all accepted, and the workshop must be paid in full by April 1st. Hatch taught sculpture and drawing in the Art and Design Department (MSU) from 1974 until 2015 when he retired. At this two-hour art talk and workshop he will share his knowledge of “Silverpoint” drawing (that includes other kinds of metal besides silver, like platinum, gold, copper, bronze, lead, aluminum, zinc, and magnesium) done on coated medium. During the workshop you will learn to draw with a metal point.
